Descartes proposes an Evil Geenie at the end of the first meditation, as a culmination of his process of questioning all the accepted knowledge until then. In this paper two probably sources of inspiration for the Evil Geenie are presented. One of them is the play Amphitruo by Plauto, and the other one is the unfortunate adventures of Urban Grandier, parish priest of Loudun, prosecuted in a judicial process by sorcery in 1631.
