This paper approaches the idea of progress in part of the work of one of the most illustrious Venezuelans of the XIX century, Don Cecilio Acosta. It is of special interest the fact that his analysis about the national situation demonstrates a strong tension between the country he dreamed and the country that suffered: infested of wars, ignorance and backwardness. Nowadays, as you approach his texts, readers will surely admire his advanced approaches and their validity. Fortunately one can count on the edition of his entire works of the Foundation “La casa de Bello” which enables an extraordinary approach to all his work and especially his collected letters of which there will be a special mention.
