According to Hannah Arendt human freedom does not erase the historical contradiction plagued with failure and violence. Hence invoking history to dignify human freedom is possible if we recognize the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation as conditions for the survival of individuals through historical-political processes. Forgiveness is a faculty that achieves what may seem impossible: to reverse violence and overcome irrational and inhumane historical events such as totalitarianism. Our conclusion is that forgiveness and reconciliation offer the possibility of building a philosophy of history that enables us to understand the present.
