Social capital and democracy in Venezuela

Summary

This article aims at exploring the influence of social capital, measured by trust and participation, on Support to Democracy in Venezuela. First, we analyze the hypothesis which indicates that social capital is unequally distributed in society, being social strata and lower educational levels those that have lower levels of such kind of capital. Second, we examine the hypothesis which indicates that those with higher levels of social capital tend to support more democracy. To achieve this goal we used the data from the second wave of surveys Poverty Project developed by the Universidad Catolica Andrés Bello. The results indicate that social status has an impact on social capital and thus on the orientation towards participation and the preference of the political system.
