The objective of this article is to present an analysis of international trends related to the circular economy, by studying the literature published in the last twenty years (2001-2021), taking into account scientific articles and patent applications at the international level; as well as some of the main sources of information at the international level, such as reports from the European Commission, the United Nations and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. The bibliographic review technique and bibliometric analysis were used to obtain trends. Among the main results obtained, the circular economy is characterized by a variety of definitions whose main basis is centered on three principles: Eliminate waste and pollution from design, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems. The trend of both publications and patent applications in the analyzed period is growing rapidly, especially in the last five years and the leading countries with the highest number of publications are China and European countries, and China is the leader in terms of patent applications.
