Application of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the resolution of community problems by Industrial Engineering students

Abstract

This article presents a didactic experience that aimed to place the student, from the initial phase of his career, in context with the competencies contemplated by the profile of the industrial engineer using Project Based Learning (PBL), which connects his interests, with his professional vocation and his commitment to the society that surrounds him through awareness and training in the area of sustainability. In this sense, it was proposed as a course assignment that the students of the subject of Fundamentals of Industrial Engineering analyze two of the sustainable development objectives (SDG) linked to the topics of industries, innovation and infrastructure; and sustainable cities and communities, and that each of the teams presented, as the final project of the course, concrete proposals for action on problems identified in their communities through a project that included the design, development and promotion of a proposal or product Made from recyclable and reusable materials. From the analysis of the information obtained, it can be seen that the application of PBL promoted the autonomy and responsibility of the students in their own learning process, coupled with the constant supervision and guidance of the teacher to ensure that the work is carried out in an efficient and ordered. Likewise, it was evident that with this type of strategy solutions are given to real problems, offering students the opportunity to create and evaluate designs; as well as search, process and apply knowledge through experimentation, obtaining products and tangible evidence of the results from the beginning of their university training.
