Abstract

The Insular Region, Nueva Esparta State, located in the north-east of Venezuela, has a high potential for the exploitation of solar and wind energy, but its development has been overshadowed by the predominance of fossil fuels and their derivatives. Currently, electric power rationing is occurring due to fuel problems and units of generation out of service. Therefore, a technically feasible generation strategy is proposed, which seeks to promote the extensive use of alternative and renewable energies to reduce the use of fossil fuels. The preliminary evaluation of the solar and wind resources of the Insular region indicate the excellent possibilities for the production of such energy, improving the voltage profiles of the electrical system and contributing electrical power to the system.
