The mind-body relationship is one of the main problems present in the Meditations on First Philosophy. Descartes asserts that two created substances exist—the mind and the body—each with its respective essence, and which, furthermore, are independent of one another. Nevertheless, these two substances manifest themselves in the figure of the human being. Therefore, elucidating their relationship would allow us to understand the Cartesian conception of the individual. From reading the Meditations on First Philosophy, we can derive two possible interpretations: dualism and unitarism. In the present article, we will present both perspectives, drawing upon the observations of Arnauld and Regius.
Keywords: Mind-body relationship, dualism, unitarism, Regius, Arnauld.
