Abstract
This research addresses the use of red sludge (waste from the aluminum industry) as a catalyst in advanced oxidation processes in the retrospective scenario of effluent treatment. In the first part, red sludge is described from its physical and chemical properties as a condition for application in advanced oxidation technologies, thus contributing to new trends in green chemistry. In a second part, the main characteristics of these processes such as Fenton, photoFenton, photocatalysis and others were delved into, and in a final section the research trends developed using red sludge in advanced oxidation processes were outlined. From the methodological point of view, it is a documentary research, with a bibliographic design. The information was collected in databases (Open Access), in a study period from 2007 to 2017, the treatment of the information was carried out through critical and relational analysis. As findings we have that the use of red sludge in advanced oxidation processes has been a novel catalytic technology for the application of this environmental passive in this type of processes, having excellent successful oxidative results in chemical processes (Fenton, Fenton- like) and Photochemicals (photoFenton and photocatalysis).
