Political and civic participation among young students in universities belonging to the Society of Jesus in Latin America

Abstract

This paper analyzes the results of political and civic participation of 1,222 students between 16 and 19 years old from eight universities entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America. Results of this pilot study conducted in 2009 are compared with the Common Educational Project (ProyectoEducativo Común, PEC) of the Society of Jesus in Latin America. Student’s answers reflect a low level of political practices especially regarding to civic participation. Three lines of action are proposed to strengthen civic education from college.
