Abstract

Venezuelan migrant humor is a fertile space for reflection on the current vicissitudes of being Venezuelan. In the case of audiences outside the country, it provides them with a window and continuous commentary on the same, allowing them to be informed about current events and politics. The following article examines the construction of identity in Venezuelan migrants through a qualitative methodology and a microsociological approach. It begins by establishing everyday life as the environment that enables the construction of the migrant's narrative identity, based on Berger & Luckmann, Schutz, Gergen, Lyotard, Ricoeur and Grimson. Next, the contemporary world is characterized in terms of information technologies and the notion of self-information through Castells, Jenkins, Scolari and Rheingold. Afterwards, the construction of the Venezuelan identity is examined through 16 in-depth interviews with Venezuelans who have been out of the country for more than five years. Ten traits of the Venezuelan being are identified: Happy, family-oriented, traditional, concerned about their Venezuelan identity, concerned about being Venezuelan, about their beauty, mischievous, spontaneous, disrespectful to others and sexist.
