Abstract

Most of the methods employed in the industrial process control are based on the linearization of the mathematical model equations around an operating point. This leads to neglect some dynamics of the process and the loss of robustness of the controller. Liquid level control is a fundamental problem in the process industry. In this work, the nonlinear model of a coupled-tank system is described exactly by a linear parameter varying system (LPV). The parameter vector is defined as a function of the level of the tanks, which are supposed to be uncertain but changing between the technological operation limits of the tanks. This allows describing the LPV system by a polytope inside the operating range of the tanks and in this way, using linear matrix inequalities (LMI), design a robust controller that assures the tracking with zero-state error of input references used frequently in practice and some desired specifications in the closed-loop transient response.
