Abstract

This article presents the results of an investigation guided by the following problem: how authoritarian legacies are related to media opening barriers? The investigation of the Brazilian television market was based on concentration measurement and process analysis. The evidence supports the thesis that the oligopoly of television companies in Brazil is a relevant authoritarian legacy as a barrier to media opening in the country.
