Abstract

The concepts of institutions and sustainable development are highlighted as a framework of reference. The quality of life, a healthy, safe and ecologically balanced environment and the preservation of natural and built heritage are established as fundamental aspirations of sustainable development. Discussed as challenges of sustainable development are the growth of the middle classes, employment, production and productivity, the necessary harmony with growing urbanization, the new rurality, energy demand and its appropriate management, adaptation to technological changes and valuing the natural environment. On that basis, the interpretation of the institutions for sustainable development in the organization of the State and by society and the individual is addressed.
