This work was based on a documentary search to explain that the creation of postgraduate courses is due to the natural evolution of higher education. In this order of ideas, the model of the 21st century university postulates that research, basic or applied, a fundamental component of the curriculum, is a transversal axis inherent to postgraduate studies. In this context, these studies have an unavoidable commitment to ethics, innovation and sustainable development, which is why they must promote the comprehensive and permanent training of professionals. The roles of tutor and tutor are also explained, it is highlighted that the research engineer must develop skills in the context of the research logic, and it is proposed to promote collaborative work and co-tutoring within the framework of the complexity of current projects. Finally, the importance of disseminating achievements for knowledge management is emphasized, and the convenience of promoting the integration of postgraduate degrees in national and international networks that help mitigate the asymmetry of knowledge in today's world.
