Local power and civil commotion: the Federal War in Ocumare de la Costa (1858-1863)

Based on the analysis of documents available in regional archives, this article intends to specify the effects and consequences of the Federal Wars (1868-1863) on the cocoa-producing district of Ocumare de la Costa; a microhistorical vision of the matter, but which enables new perspectives derived from the often neglected angle of everyday life. Indeed, at the local level, the distinction between «particular interest» and «general interest» is not perceived in the same fashion as when evaluated from the outside. For a local administration, it is precisely this collision between «particular interest» and «general interest» which ensures a degree of cohesion within a given community faced with the interference of any outside element. It is then the abstract power of the State, represented in this case by military force, that is perceived as the disturbing factor.
