Issue No. 63 of Montalbán Journal is the first volume published after the passing of its founder and Director, Rev. Father José del Rey Fajardo, S.J. Nevertheless, before his departure, he prepared and submitted a final article entitled The Jesuits and Their Roots, with which we open this issue.

Rev. Father Pedro Trigo reflects on the country’s reality and ways to approach it. Meanwhile, Father Carlos Rodríguez Souquet analyzes two documentary memoirs about the Society of Jesus. Next, Professor Mariano Nava introduces us to the Venezuelan Enlightenment and the colonial Paideia in the 18th century, while Professor Daniel Lahoud discusses the controversy surrounding the debate on the Venezuelan Civil Code of 1868.

Professor Luis Perrone takes us to eastern Venezuela by studying the relationship between lawyer José Grau and Intendant José Francisco Bermúdez in the Orinoco Department of the “Gran Colombia.”

Finally, in the Essays section, Professor Gracia Salazar, a new contributor, reviews the history of the United Fruit Company through the lens of the writer Gabriel García Márquez and his works One Hundred Years of Solitude and Leaf Storm. The issue closes masterfully with a review by Emilio Ruíz Berrisbeitia of historian Reinaldo Rojas’s book Cumaná in the Formation of the Nation-State.
