This article examines two basic issues. The first deals with the ups and downs of the links between Canada and Venezuela from 1864, when the first Venezuelan consul was appointed in Montreal, until the opening of diplomatic relations in 1952. The second point shows and analyses, through the pen of the first Canadian ambassadors, who travelled extensively throughout the territory, various images of a contradictory and changing oil-producing country.
