Deixis is a subject studied since classical authors, especially by Stoic philosophers and Alexandrian grammarians. In all languages there is a group of words called deictics or demonstratives, among which those that indicate the grammatical person stand out. The deictics are few in number, but they are constantly and obstinately repeated in all sentences. Karl Bühler called this group the demonstrative field, as opposed to the symbolic field formed by nouns, a much larger group. Here we study the features that characterize deictics, as well as the function and importance they have in the use of language, especially to allow fluid and successful human communication.
