Abstract

In the history of the political press within "Great Colombia" (1821-1830), El Argos Republicano de Cumaná has the merit of having been the first newspaper published in eastern Venezuelan lands. The notes and articles written, received and reproduced by its editor, Manuel José Rivas, and the printer Hadlock Dart, represent an exceptional source for learning about the political situation in the province of Cumaná and the Department of Orinoco in 1825, a crucial year because, among other events, the first general elections for the Executive and Legislative Powers of the new republic would be held. In this work, both the form and the content of said newspaper are analyzed, taking into account the political and intellectual contexts that prevailed at the time of its circulation.
