Alcatraz Project: A response to the criminal phenomenon in Venezuela

Abstract

The criminal phenomenon is complex and multidimensional. The environment plays a determining role as an enhancer of individual aspects that favor criminal behavior. The accelerated growth of crime in Latin America has been evident, especially in Venezuela. In this scenario, the Proyecto Alcatraz approach is innovative. The dismantling of criminal gangs and the prison rugby program, promote personal change as a central point of social change. The origin, context and intervention proposal will be reviewed. The results obtained by Alcatraz demonstrate the effectiveness of its approach for social change and restoration.
