Abstract

This study offers an analysis of the racist ideology underlying the social representations contained in some written discourses compiled by Ermila Troconis de Veracoechea (1969) in Documentos para el estudio de los esclavos negros en Venezuela (Documents for the study of Black slaves in Venezuela). This has been developed on guidelines corresponding to Teun van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and the theory of Social Cognition approached by the same. It is based on the contrast of the discourse used by the protagonists: them (Black slaves-dominated) and us (white Spanish-dominant) to interpret the environment and the events that occur in it. For the development of the analysis, two documents were used, one belonging to the 16th century and the other to the 17th century, chosen for their evident load of social and ideological representations. These documents were analyzed with various discursive and cognitive tools, based on certain ideological categories: (1) identity/membership, (2) values and norms, (3) activities/tasks, (4) social position, (5) goals/objectives, and (6) resources, which made it possible to identify, extract and interpret the ideological manifestations that determined the relationship of the groups in their environment (them-us).
