Abstract:

This article presents experiences of black peasant formation in Brazil during the times of slavery and post-emancipation. Based on archival sources and an ethno-historical approach, it seeks to understand the formation of peasant groups close to regions where there were runaway communities, black sharecropper villages, and housing for slaves. This article analyses the formation of collective memory, its meaning, and the use of land. It also explains how the presence of these settlements is related to current debates on land property rights in areas where there are Quilombo remnants’ lands and black landless peasants.

Keywords: 20th century Brazil, agrarian history, establishment of peasant groups.
ER -
